Field work efficiency
Fortum optimizes operations using M2M solutions for field resources.
Fortum is one of the Nordic Region’s leading energy companies with operations across all the Nordic countries, Russia and around the Baltic Sea. Fortum Distribution owns and services regional and local electricity grids and distributes electricity to 1.6 million customers in the Nordic Region. In 2006, Fortum started using PreCom as a development platform in order to optimize its operations and automize its field resources: vehicles, service locations and service technicians.
Each individual resource automatically transmits its position, status and time report over the 3G network. The solution also has an embedded connection of meters, service orders, interrupted orders, construction works and emergency orders during shutdowns. An alarm module is available which generates an M2M alarm during dangerous working tasks that is triggered after a specified time interval.
The solution has helped to dramatically simplify work distribution and hence improve the efficiency of field work. This has led to shortened waiting-times for customers and less paperwork. Cash-flow has also been strengthened by real-time invoicing. The automatic alarm function has increased security for the service technicians combined with the fact that for certain assignments only one technician now needs to be sent out.
