Capgemini operates over 1.3 million GPRS-connected electric meters for different utilities in Sweden as Managed Business Service. The service includes operation, maintenance of the complete solution and communication of meter data to the utilities back-end systems for billing purposes and grid supervision.
750 000 of these meters are each equipped with a SIM-card which allows the GPRS connected meter to contact the Capgemini operated central system to deliver meter readings, hourly consumption values, events and alarms. The meters may also be contacted from the central system for on-demand reading, status checks and remote commands. Other meters communicate indirectly by GPRS using other media for short-haul communication.
Unlike in many other M2M solutions where an application is supported by the use of M2M, here it is M2M which forms the primary part of the application. If the communication fails our service fails. How it works
This very high volume service is managed, orchestrated and monitored from our centers in Örebro and Lillehammer. Every day over one million meters communicate their captured process data to the central systems for refinement and delivery to the utilities. The massive employment of SIM-cards also means that we need to handle them very rationally. The meters are fitted with SIM already before leaving the factory and the SIM-cards and the meters stay together the entire life-span of the meter. The total process concept to deliver this service includes many parts that all must work together.
We use our own in-house developed Smart Energy Services Platform as our system to orchestrate and monitor the delivery, installation and deployment of the meters and to keep track of all aspects of the service engagement like monitoring of communication and SLA levels, investigate problems, and perform field actions. An integral part of the solution is the PDA application used for Logistics and field work. These PDAs also makes use of M2M to capture data in field, communicate work orders and keep the central system up-to-date. In essence we have a M2M based service which in itself is supported by yet another M2M solution.
